Sony's PS3 Slim is the latest release of the renowned games console.
The Playstation 3 Slim is relatively similar to what it was like in the last
version, but the design has undergone a few changes.
The Slim's design has been changed from the old version. It's 33% smaller, 36% lighter and uses 34% less power than the previous version.
Sony have also changed the touch-sensitive buttons to standard push-buttons, and have removed the master power switch at the back of the unit.
One of the modifications of the Slim that I don't like as much is the removal of the
amazing gloss that used to make the console look pretty desirable. The "Playstation 3"
writing has been simplified to the simplistic etching of "PS3". These changes have
made the Slim pretty, well, dull.
The Slim has also dropped the silver trim. Perhaps the removal of these design frills
is one of Sony's attempts to make the Slim cheaper, having lost quite a lot of money
following a destructive lawsuit with Dualshock.
Luckily, the two USB ports on the front, and the usual HDMI, AV multi-out,
ethernet and optical-out ports on the back remain as they were. No losses
there. The power cable on the Slim has been cut in size to a slimmer two-pin
cable.
There's still a BluRay drive on the Slim, which will let you play your movies in
a brilliant 1080p of quality! It can now also bitstream Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD
Master Audio to a receiver through HDMI.
There is a bit of a problem with the PS3 Slim's CD and DVD playback; there is more
audio jitter when these formats are played then there was on the last version of PS3.
However, the DVD upscaling feature seems to overshadow this all, and you'll probably
be so impressed at the video quality that you don't even notice the little sound defects.
This all leads to the question; should I purchase the PS3 Slim? Priced at almost 250, it
is quite well priced in Sony standards, yet in the perspective of the Wii or 360, it may
seem a little overpriced. However, you should take into consideration the fact that the
Playstation 3 Slim does play BluRay discs, and many of the BluRay players cost more
than the Slim. If you do have the money, and are after a great console, the Slim will
be a great console for you. However, if the Slim seems quite expensive, and you already
have the "fat" PS3, there's no real justified reason why you should fork out the money
to upgrade.
