Why Is It People Don't Fall Out of Roller Coasters at the Amusement Park?

Why do we "stick" to the roller coaster cars as they go upside down in a loop? Because of gravity.Why do we "stick" to the earth rather than float upwards? Because of gravity. It sounds weird, but it's true.

A roller coaster loop isn't actually circular. It is more of a teardrop shape that is called "clothoid," a spiral in which the radius changes constantly. In a perfectly circular loop the radius is constant. But in a clothoid loop, the radius at the bottom is larger than the radius at the top. It's much the same shape as a standard helium balloon.

If a roller coaster loop were circular, to have enough speed to hold the cars to the track as they loop over would require 8 g's of acceleration as you go into the loop. Fighter pilots black out when they experience 7 or more g's, so this would clearly be dangerous to the human body. There have been a couple of cases of designers trying to include perfectly round loops. The ride was only open for about a month in 1985 and for only a few days in 1995, but both times there were enough bloody noses and back injuries that it was clear that the ride could not remain open. One was not a coaster, but an enclosed water slide in a New Jersey park called Action Park.

To avoid the problems of excessive g forces, coaster (and water slide) designers make the loops in a clothoid shape. This way, the forces are 3 or 4 g's, which are exciting, but not dangerous. The rider's lowest speed in the loop is at the top of the loop.The rider feels the greatest speeds at the bottom of the loop, both entering and exiting.

A further way to look at it is that it is the inertia keeping you from falling out of the roller coaster. This is what presses your body to the outside of the loop as the cars go through the loop. Gravity is still pulling you down to the ground, but at the top of the clothoid loop, the acceleration pulling upward is much stronger than gravity.

Banjo Stocking Stuffers

Does it drive you up the proverbial wall when retailers fill their stores with Christmas stuff long before Christmas? Then you are much like my wife Angie. Stores need to get ahead on Christmas sales, especially with the current economic downturn, and when you consider that Christmas sales may be the biggest part of what they do all year, it's understandable the way they develop their sales pitch early. I respect their need to do that and it doesn't really bother me too much. But it drives my wife Angie crazy. She will grab early Christmas ads up and post them to the refrigerator door as a reminder not to buy a Christmas gift from that retailer. It sounds a little intolerant, I know. But here is what she said to me.

"Shopping seems to be the only thing we think about at Christmas these days. Shopping is necessary, and is a big part of Christmas, but it shouldn't be the main part. We should be thinking more about the giving than the shopping. Retailers should think some about that too. If they come out with all their Christmas stuff two months before Christmas, Santa stations with elves set up, long lines of children waiting to tell Santa all they want for Christmas, with all the bump and tug, it puts too much emphasis on buying and selling.

"Names are drawn and Christmas gifts are bought, not just for the kids, but for everyone, presents are wrapped, stockings are hung, all this hustle and bustle and commercialization of the season seem a far cry from the simple idea of being together as a family or with friends just to count our blessings. All this flim-flam about trees, and presents, and Santa Claus tends to obscure the marvelous truth about what each person has in his or her own heart and expresses as the gifts of spirit, sharing and warmth. Instead, it's nothing but beggars beg and spenders spend, drinkers drink and vendors vend, or something like that-however that ancient rhyme goes.

"Then as soon as the 26th rolls around the stores are open with slashed prices to attract more shopping they hope will last until the next season. Then those Christmas gifts are exchanged or returned, gift certificates are redeemed, yadda yadda yadda. The truth about Christmas would come out if you took away all the gifts," she says. "Stuff the stockings and that would be it. Then we could get a fresh start. Then we could add gifts as a way to show real feeling, or benevolence or as a symbol of God's gift." Then she concludes with the question, "Don't you agree with me, Walker?"

I didn't answer. I decided long ago not to argue with my wife Angie about anything she feels strongly, or anything else for that matter. I can see her point, but sometimes I let Christmas sneak up on me, and I don't mind a little reminder about the need to take care of Christmas gifts from time to time. I'm not really being sold anything, it's just a reminder. I do sometimes wish, though, that they would wait until Thanksgiving to remind me about Christmas. What I need before Thanksgiving is a reminder about Thanksgiving.

But ask yourself, where would we be if businesses who sell Christmas gifts had to wait until a specified time to begin to sell those gifts? They sell most of this stuff throughout the year, not just at Christmas time. People buy this stuff every day for one reason or another. What's wrong with a little reminder now and then? I see their point, and I don't mind it. My wife Angie though, she'll head for the refrigerator door like lightning when a Christmas ad, er reminder, comes in the mail. As for me I've been known to sneak over there from time to time to get a reminder about a Christmas gift I need to buy.

When I decided not to argue with my wife Angie's point of view, I also found it a good practice to apologize in advance if I don't agree with everything she says. And I know she is going to see this. So here I am, disagreeing and apologizing at the same time. My only hope is that I get forgiveness for one or the other, not to mention both.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - A Track by Track Review

So much is said about The Beatles legendary 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band but I think too much of what is said is about it's historical significance and the like. Not enough attention is paid to the music itself. And that's why with this article I'm focusing entirely on the music, one song at a time.

01. "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" - This opening track really sets the mood for the entire album. The song shifts styles abruptly just like the album does from song to song. And of course the crowd noise and the entire "Sgt. Pepper" concept are introduced here.

02. "With a Little Help from my Friends" - The perfect song for Ringo Starr to sing. John Lennon & Paul McCartney wrote this song together specifically for Ringo to sing which I think makes the great lyrics all that much greater (think of them in that context.)

03. "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" - One of the bands most famous songs. This is a great one to listen to in mono (you have to get The Beatles in Mono Box Set) because it sounds so much different in mono than it does in stereo. There's a lot more effect on the vocal in mono!

04. "Getting Better" - The "it couldn't get much worse" lyric that Lennon added to this McCartney song is such a great example of the way that Lennon and McCartney made each others songs better even when they weren't righting them "eyeball to eyeball" like in the early days.

05. "Fixing a Hole" - Possibly the best lyrics Paul McCartney ever wrote. Another one of my favorites on an album filled with favorites.

06. "She's Leaving Home" - This song is very interesting to hear in mono because it's actually sped up (and thus pitched up) in the mono mix. It has a lot more energy that way. Definitely worth a listen!

07. "Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite" - I think my favorite part of this song is the cut up tape section where it sounds like sort of insane random carnival music.

08. "Within You Without You" - This is a song that gets a lot of hate by a lot of people and that makes me sad. It makes me feel like they don't really "get it." This song is an essential part of what makes this album so brilliant.

09. "When I'm Sixty-Four" - I love how quickly the musical styles change with this album. We go from a carnival to India to music hall!

10. "Lovely Rita" - In an album filled with stand-out tracks, this one is probably somewhat forgettable in comparison. Of course it's still a great song.

11. "Good Morning Good Morning" - John was inspired by a Kellogg's Corn Flakes commercial to write this song. Pretty cool lead guitar bits played by Paul.

12. "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)" - This song, of course, ties together the whole album by linking us back to the first song. It gives the impression that everything we've been hearing (even though it's all of these wildly different styles) has been a part of one big performance by this fictional band.

13. "A Day in the Life" - In my opinion this is the best song ever written. An absolutely epic way to end the album.

I'm a simple man -- simple pleasures, some would even say I may be simple-minded. Humbug. I recently went to my local video store. I guess I should say my local "DVD" store, but old habits die hard. The double-time march of technology moves so quickly it's hard keep pace. In fact, I only recently have finished converting all my music tapes with CDs. And it only took me 10 years to do it.

Imagine my dread when the iPod entered the picture. I knew the writing was on the wall with regards to my CD collection. The problem is, which one do I use? The Touch? The Nano? The Mosquito? I think a waiting strategy is in order. By the time I have the cash to buy one, the newest one will be on the market. But I digress.

Trolling through the narrow aisles, looking for something to rent that my wife wouldn't object to, I couldn't help but notice the 60-inch HDTV playing a Disney cartoon. It was hard to turn my head away from it as it dealt with talking animals. I was so mesmerized I forgot why I was there. I forgot my name, the time, even where I lived. The Technicolor brilliance of the images moving on the screen had me thoroughly enthralled. Then, faintly -- in the distance -- I heard honking.

Time meant nothing to me anymore and I'm not sure how much time passed when my wife swept in and shook me by the shoulders. "What's going on?" she asked. "You've been standing there for ten minutes -- didn't you hear me honking?" I brushed her aside and noticed the Blu-Ray player bolted underneath the screen. It was a revelation. I started blinking again and cleared my vision to see the shelves directly in front of me were filled with Blu-Ray discs.

The remainder of the night was spent tossing my VHS collection and unplugging my video cassette player. I had rented a stack of brilliant new DVDs and was eager to get my new Blu-Ray player up and running. Covered in eager sweat, I finally settled down to watch my first rental around 10 o'clock. But something struck me -- where did my wife go?

UFC 88 Flashback: Evans Dominates 'The Iceman'

If Evans needed any more validation of how little respect he was getting, he could have taken a look at the UFCs text message prediction poll of the main event which favored The Iceman by a whopping 81% to 19% margin. Or he could have listened to the UFC announcers, who had all but penciled Liddell in for a return to light heavyweight title contention after his inevitable victory. Instead of complain, Evans let his fists do the talking and with a perfectly placed overhand right will likely never have to worry about a lack of respect again.

From the opening horn, Evans showed no fear of Liddells once legendary power. Instead, he danced and moved (which was dumbly criticized as showboating by the UFC announce team), using his slick footwork and speed to dart in and out of range of Liddells punches.

Evans highlight reel power shot was to come in the 2nd round. Liddell backed Evans up near the cage wall and went to throw an uppercut. Simultaneously, Evans responded with an overhand right that landed quicker, harder and more accurately. The perfectly placed punch knocked Liddell out cold and referee Herb Dean jumped in to cover him up and wave off the fight without taking a second look. Evans' KO was one of the most devastating in the history of the sport, and made all the more so by the status of the man on the receiving end.

This was the UFCs first trip to Atlanta and despite a good attendance the crowd itself was somewhat disappointing. In a marked contrast to the knowledgeable and enthusiastic fans at the Target Center in Minneapolis for UFC 87"arguably the best MMA crowd ever at a US venue"the live crowd at Phillips Arena often acted as if they were at a taping of Georgia Championship Wrestling. Every foreign fighter was booed mercilessly"including South Korean Kim. Kim was treated like legendary Gary Hart managed pro wrestling heel Pak Song as he had to endure a USA chant during his fight. Perhaps the audience didnt realize that South Korea has been a US ally since its establishment after WW II. The fighters from other longtime adversaries of the United States"Brazil and Holland"fared somewhat better.

More problematic was the crowds utter lack of respect for the fighters postfight. Poor Dong Hyun Kim was booed during his postfight interview like he was Professor Toru Takana cutting a heel promo on Mr. Wrestling 2 after winning the Georgia Heavyweight Title by throwing salt in his opponents eyes while the referee was distracted. Not quite the respect that a 4th degree judo black belt whod just won a very tough fight deserves. Even Rashad Evans was booed after his dominating KO victory.
